How to Wash Rugs in a Washing Machine (Philippines Edition)

How to Wash Rugs in a Washing Machine: Safe Steps for Filipino Homes

Not all rugs can be washed in a washing machine—but for the ones that can, machine washing is incredibly convenient. This guide explains which rug types are machine-washable, the exact settings to use, and how to dry them properly in the Philippines’ humid climate.

Which Rugs Can Be Machine Washed?

Only specific rug types are designed for machine washing. Safe options include:

  • Machine-washable rugs
  • Lightweight flatweave rugs
  • Some Oeko-Tex rugs (depending on backing material)
  • Cotton-blend rugs in small sizes

Rugs That Should NOT Be Machine Washed

  • Wool rugs (risk of shrinking or felting)
  • Shag or deep-pile rugs
  • Heavy woven rugs
  • Rugs with rubber or PVC backing
  • High-value or delicate rugs

Step-by-Step: How to Machine Wash a Rug

1. Check the Label

If the rug doesn’t explicitly say “machine washable,” assume it is not.

2. Remove Dust First

  • Shake the rug outdoors
  • Vacuum both sides

Dust becomes mud during washing—removing it prevents grime buildup.

3. Use a Gentle Cycle

Recommended settings:

  • Cycle: gentle / delicate
  • Water: cold only
  • Detergent: mild, no bleach
  • Spin: low or medium

4. Wash Alone

Do not wash with clothes or towels—rugs are heavy when wet and can damage other items.

5. Air Dry Only

Never use a dryer—especially in the Philippines where heat combined with humidity can damage the rug backing.

  • Dry in shade, not under harsh direct sunlight
  • Hang with plenty of airflow
  • Use a fan for faster drying
  • Ensure it is completely dry before placing it back on tiled floors

If the backside still feels cool, the interior is not dry yet.

Machine Washing Tips for PH Climate

  • Wash early in the day to maximize drying time
  • Increase airflow if you live in a condo
  • Avoid washing on rainy days (slow drying increases mold risk)
  • Use a dehumidifier if available

How Often Should Machine-Washable Rugs Be Washed?

  • Bedrooms: every 2–3 months
  • Living rooms: every 1–2 months
  • Homes with kids or pets: as needed
